Geotechnical characterization of the base lands for solar drying of the company “Comandante Che Guevara”
Main Article Content
Abstract
The solar drying technology in Moa is carried out by distributing lateritic ores on artificial small squares in the form of piles outdoors as an alternative to rationalize the ammoniacal carbonate process applied during the production of nickel plus cobalt. In the present investigation, the geotechnical characterization of the base lands arranged by the company “Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara” is presented, for the construction and assembly of 9 small squares used in this method. The results of the determination of the geomechanical properties of this area are presented, as well as its behavior under different load conditions and possible geological risks to occur in the region located in the “Punta Gorda” deposit, concessioned to this mining company. For its execution, a geotechnical study of the areas was developed, included in blocks R, Q, P, S51-53, O53-55, and N-53-54, which cover a total of 63.1 Ha. The results obtained allow the safe and stable exploitation of the plazas, evaluate their stability, prevent landslides and collapses that could cause material and human damage; Therefore, they constitute a fundamental tool to understand the behavior of rocks, their interaction with the designed structures and the environment, as well as making decisions that guarantee the quality parameters required by the applied mining-metallurgical process.
